Islamabad, June 16 (TNS): Former President of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Punjab chapter Imtiaz Safdar Waraich on Friday formally announced to join Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in a press conference at Bani Gala on Friday.
The development came after PPP’s stalwarts Nazar Muhammad Gondal from Mandi Bahauddin, Nawabzada Ghazanfar Ali Gul from Gujrat, and Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan from Sialkot have abandoned the party and joined PTI camp.
PTI Chairman Imran Khan welcomed the Waraich, saying his inclusion will strengthen PTI in Gujranwala division.
Speaking on the occasion, the PTI chief said Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif should step down from his post while his family offshore assets were being investigated by a joint investigation team (JIT).
Khan said the JIT members must not feel threatened or worried because of the threats being hurled at them as they had the support of the masses.
“The people of Pakistan haven’t given anybody a mandate to indulge in corruption and money laundering,” he added.
“This nation is in debt because of the ongoing corruption and money laundering.”
The PTI chief alleged that the Qatari prince’s letter produced in the Panama Papers was a fraud.
“They [the Sharif family] don’t have any other way to show how money was sent out of Pakistan to purchase properties in London,” he maintained.
“’The prime minister did not produce that letter for eight months and suddenly came up with it after his address in the parliament.”
Khan said Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leaders, through their statements, were also hinting that they would not accept the JIT’s findings.
“We will make you accept the JIT’s decision. The masses will take to the streets if you don’t,” the PTI chief warned.
It is vital to mention here that Warraich’s inclusion is the fourth major jolt to the PPP’s Gujranwala division, home of the party’s central Punjab President Qamar Zaman Kaira.
Imtiaz Warraich was among the PPP’s senior members and is regarded as a veteran politician and a party giant.
Born in Punjab’s Gujranwala district, Warraich is a lawyer by profession who served as the Gujranwala district’s bar association’s general secretary from 1982 to1983 and was a member of the local district council from 1983 to1991.
He has also served as the director of Punjab Provincial Cooperative Bank Limited and was a federal minister in former premier Benazir Bhutto’s second government.
He was twice elected as MNA in 2002 and 2008 from NA-98, his home constituency in Gujranwala, and was elected as an MPA for the Punjab Assembly in 1993, also from a seat in the same region. After his win in 2008, Warraich served as state minister for communication.
Moreover, Fawad Chaudhry has also revealed that Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid’s (PML-Q) former district nazim from Khanewal Ahmed Yar Haraj will also join PTI soon.
